Next Issue: A new magazine subscription service for iPad and tablets

I started subscribing to magazine such as Vanity Fair and Wired on my iPad over a year ago. But the cost was pricey and it was hard to remember to update each issue.

Recently a new service, Next Issue, has come out for iPads and Android 3 tablets.

Called the “Netflix for magazines,” Next Issue is a partnership among Condé Nast, Hearst, Time Inc., Meredith, and News Corporation. Right now there are 120 monthly and weekly magazines available.

The subscription service is an “all-you-can-eat buffet” of monthly and weekly magazines. The basic plan is $9.99 a month for access to all the monthly magazines such as Wired, Vanity Fair, Cosmo, and Esquire. The premium plan is $15.99 a month and provides full access to all the monthly magazine as well as the weeklies such as The New Yorker, Time, and People. And once you download an issue, you can read it offline.

Most magazines are custom-designed for the tablet experience and include enhancements such as videos, bonus photography, and interactive features.

Not only is the service a great bargain, just leafing through each issue provides inspiration for how to use the interactive features from InDesign in your own tablet apps.

There’s a 30-day free trial to give you an idea of how the service works.
