New DPS Tools v29 released

Logo for DPS updatesAdobe has released DPS Tools v29, part one of a two-part release rollout. The The second part of the release is scheduled to take place in January, after the holidays.

This release includes new features in the DPS App Builder, as well as improvements in social sharing and web viewing and a number of enhancements for the Enterprise Edition.

New DPS Tools v28 released

Logo for DPS updatesThis weekend Adobe released DPS Tools v28.

Perhaps the biggest news about this update is iOS7 support. This will be a big change for the development community, including DPS apps. For more information on creating apps that take advantage of iOS7 features, see Adobe’s document iOS7 Support in the v28 DPS Viewer.

New DPS Tools v26 released

Logo for DPS updatesToday Adobe released DPS Tools v26.

There are several welcome improvements. One we are particularly happy to see is that PDF folios can now be previewed in the Desktop Viewer. Previously you could only preview these folios on the iPad. PDF folios can now be used on Android devices, too, bringing the advantages of PDF folios to that platform.

There are some improvements in the iPad library view, along with full iPhone 5 screen support.

H or V? Who’s doing what

orientationOne of the first decisions to make when creating a DPS app is whether to make the orientation horizontal, vertical, or both.

Some publishers find a dual orientation to be too much work, and opt for a single view. Vertical orientation is often closer to the print version of a publication, and can require less reworking, but a horizontal orientation can give more of the feel of spreads, especially for photography. DPS Bug Fixes

bugAs DPS evolves and more DPS apps are developed, it becomes important with each new release to keep up with the latest version of the software. These update include new features as well as bug fixes and “hot fixes” which include fixes for bugs introduced by the new release. So it is the case with the recently released DPS Tools v25.

For example, those using iOS 6.1 may have hit a nasty bug which caused DPS apps to crash if there was no internet connection. A “hot fix” on the DPS server side (no need to download new DPS tools on the user side) corrected this.  Continue reading

What’s my (DPS) viewer version number?

Here’s a little tip from our book. Since the release of DPS tools v21, you can select the version number of the viewer you want your folio to be compatible with. But how do you know the version of the viewer you’re using? The trick is the same for publications you’ve downloaded, or in the generic Adobe Content Viewer on your tablet: Open a publication. Tap once to display the navigation controls, then double-tap at the top on the publication name. The viewer version number will be displayed. view_version

New DPS Tools v24 released

Logo for DPS updatesLast Friday, Adobe released DPS Tools v24. There are some nice improvements in this version.

We particularly like that when an app is being downloaded on to an iPad, the user can go to other apps on the iPad, or view another folio, without the download cancelling. When creating apps, you can now update multiple articles at once in the Folio Builder panel.

While the frequency of DPS Tool updates can be annoying at times, small improvements such as these are welcome additions. Continue reading
